The Stalker lowered a segment of its body. Within the light, a small movement: an outline half-buried, wrapped in faded cloth. Arah’s hands trembled as she dug, sand sliding like slow rain. When she pulled the form free, it was not cold. Her father’s face was weathered but whole, eyes closed under a beard threaded with gray. Around his neck hung a shard of blue glass she had given him when she was small— proof, she thought, that fate keeps foolish little promises. The Stalker lowered a segment of its body
